Surviving your first night of Minecraft! What to do and not to do!

Minecraft has had a major overhaul since I wrote this guide so I updated the pictures and some of this guide is not relevant anymore!

I know there are a lot of guides on the internet on your first night of survival in Minecraft. But I am going to give you what I think is the best strategy and the emergency way! The object of the game is to mine. Are you going to need to mine resources for everything right? So what I like to do is what I call “The MC Nation” plan!

The first thing you’re going to is scout the area for trees near a mountain or hill or the very least chop down trees first and go looking for a mountain or hill. The reason for this is because you’re going to have 10 minutes to build a shelter before the mobs come out. And if you just started it’s going to be really bad news for you.

So assuming you found trees near a mountain or hill or you’re going to chop trees and then find a mountain or hill. The first thing you’re going to want to do is to press the right trigger on an Xbox or PlayStation controller or hold down on the screen if you’re on Android or IOS and left mouse button on PC. And you’re going to want to chop the tree from the bottom to the top. You’re not going to have enough time but the tree is going to drop saplings. It’s very important to collect the saplings and replant them to make new trees. I will have more on this in another guide.

The next thing you’re going to want to do is to make wooden planks and crafting table, pickaxes and an ax. In order to make the crafting table, you’re going to need to make wooden planks. You’re going to need to go to your inventory and. You’re going to need to Push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to need to touch Square button with the three dots on and on PC you’re going to push the E key on your keyboard.

Next, your going to click on the crafting box on your character by using the D-pad on Xbox or Playstation and by touching it on Android or IOS and the crafting area is on the character screen on PC.

Now you’re going to select the wooden block with the left thumbstick and push the button A on Xbox and the X button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to touch the woodblock on the screen hold down and on PC you’re going to hover over you woodblock click the left mouse button and place them in the crafting slot by clicking the left mouse button.

Now we are going to make a crafting table. This process is simplified for Xbox, PlayStation, Android, and IOS. All you have to do is select the crafting table on the crafting menu and push the A button on Xbox and the X button on PlayStation and touch the crafting table and hold own on the screen Android or IOS. And on PC you’re going to select the wooden planks from your inventory and hover over them with the mouse and left click the wooden block and hover over the crafting area and click the left mouse button and fill all 4 squares.

The next thing you’re going to do is place the crafting table on the ground. To do this you’re going to want to open your inventory and you’re going to need to push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to need to touch Square button with the three dots on and on PC you’re going to push the E key on your keyboard.

To place the crafting table you’re going to hover over it with the left thumbstick and push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation. Now that you have it on the hot bar you’re going to look down and push the A button on Xbox and the X button on PlayStation. And on IOS you’re going to tap the crafting table to get it on your hot bar and look down and tap the ground. And on PC you’re going to hover over the crafting table and you’re going to click the left mouse button and you’re going to put it in your hot bar and look down and click the ground with the left mouse button.

Now that we have our crafting table the next thing we’re going to do is to make wooden hatchets and two wooden pickaxes. To do this you’re going look at the crafting table and you’re going to push the left trigger on Xbox or Playstation and you’re going to tap the crafting table on the screen on Android and IOS and you’re going to click the left mouse button on PC.

Next, you’re going to select the sticks and you’re going to push the Y button on Xbox and you’re going to push the Triangle button on PlayStation and you’re going to tap the sticks on Android and IOS.  And on PC your going to click the left mouse button and drag the wooden blocks to the crafting table and you’re going to put them on the crafting table by clicking the left mouse button. You’re going to put the wooden planks on in the bottom row and one in the middle row and you’re going to use your left mouse button and click the sticks

.

Next, you’re going to select the ax and you’re going to push the A button on Xbox and you’re going to push the X button on PlayStation and you’re going to tap the ax on Android and IOS.  And on PC you’re going to use two of the stick you just made and you’re going to click on them with left the mouse button and you’re going to put one in the center of the middle and bottom row.

Next your going to need 3 wooden blocks you’re going to click on them with the left the mouse button and hover over the crafting slots and click the left mouse button and put two of them in the top row one on the left and one in the middle and you’re going to place the last in the middle left row right next to the sticks and now you’re going to use the left mouse button and click the axe.

Next, you’re going to select the pickaxe and you’re going to push the A button on Xbox and you’re going to push the X button on PlayStation and you’re going to tap the pickaxe on Android and IOS.  And on PC you’re going to use two of the stick you just made you’re going to click the left mouse button to pick up the sticks and then you’re going to click the left mouse button and put one in the center of the middle and bottom row.

Next, you’re going to need 3 wooden blocks and you’re going to hover over them and click the left mouse button and place three of them in the top row by clicking the left mouse button and you’re going to use the left mouse button and click the pickax.

Now that we have our ax and our two pickaxes were going to make our cave shelter. The next thing you’re going to want to do is to go over to the mountain or hill and use the pickaxe. To do this you’re going to want to open your inventory and you’re going to need to Push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to need to touch Square button with the three dots on and on PC you’re going to push the E key on your keyboard.

Next your going to use the pickaxe by moving the crosshair with your left thumbstick and hover over it and push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and by touching it on Android or IOS and by clicking the pickaxe with the left mouse button on PC and then you’re going to place it the hot bar by clicking the left mouse button.

Now its time to mine and you’re going to want to go two blocks high and 3 blocks deep. To do this you’re going to hold down the left trigger on the Xbox or Playstation and you’re going to touch the screen on Android and IOS. And on the PC you’re going to click and hold down the left mouse button. Now that we have our cave started were going to want to put the door up.

To do this you’re going to want to open your inventory and you’re going to need to push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to need to touch Square button with the three dots on and on PC you’re going to push the E key on your keyboard.

Next your going to click on the door by moving the crosshair with your left thumbstick and you’re going to hover over it and push the Y button on Xbox and the Triangle button on PlayStation and by touching it on Android or IOS and by clicking the left mouse button on PC and click the left mouse button again to place it on the hot bar.

The next thing you’re going to do is use the left or right bumper button and you going to select the door. And you’re going to want to move to the front of the cave and place the door down. To do this you’re going to look down and use the A button on the Xbox and the X button on PlayStation and on Android or IOS you’re going to move the crosshairs to the ground and tap on the screen. And on PC you’re going to look at the ground and use the left mouse button and click the floor.

Congratulations you’re now safe and you will be able to survive the night. And you can mine in the cave while you wait for daylight. But let’s suppose that it’s still light outside and you have time to kill. What your going to want to do is use the pickaxe and mine again. You’re going to mine 3 blocks high and one block deep until you have 8 cobblestone blocks.

Then you’re going to go outside and place them in the crafting station. Next, you’re going to select the furnace and you’re going to push the A button on Xbox and you’re going to push the X button on PlayStation and you’re going to tap the furnace on Android and IOS.  And on PC you’re going to use 8 blocks and you’re going to put them in the crafting station by clicking them with the left mouse button and you’re going to put them in all the slots and leave out the one in the center in the center. Next, you’re going to use the left mouse button and click the furnace. Now that you made the furnace you’re going to place it on the ground.

Now that we have our furnace on the ground we are going to chop more wood. I would chop enough wood until you have 12 pieces of wooden blocks. Next, you’re going to go back to the furnace and you’re going to place 5 in the top row and 5 in the bottom row. This is going to make charcoal.

Take the charcoal off the furnace by pushing Y on Xbox and Triangle on PlayStation and tap the charcoal on Android and IOS and you’re going to click the left mouse button on PC and put it into your inventory.

The next thing you’re going to do is go to the crafting table and make wooden planks with the two leftover pieces of wood. After you have made the wooden planks you’re going to make sticks with the wooden planks.

The next thing you’re going to go is to make torches. Select the torch on Xbox and Playstation and make as many torches as you can. By this time it is going to be getting dark. Go back to the mine and place the torches you just made and mine away. You can mine as deep as you want to until you hit bedrock. Myself I always mine down to bedrock.

Now let’s assume you’re in a horrible spawn and there’s nothing around you and it’s getting dark. This is what I call the last resort method. You’re going to dig 3 blocks straight down and put a piece of dirt over your head and wait 10 minutes. And there you have it “The Mc Nation” plan! Please feel free to let me know what you think of our first guide by posting on the forums.

  1. I wish I had read this before trying the game.
My first night was like this: "Oh cool it's dark now! There is a night/day cycle… pretty neat. Well let's explore and see if something change at night. Oh there is someone down there… who is th… oh shit! Oh shiiiit! Run run run, it's a skeleton! Run run run ru… death":
Yes I like going in a game completely blind (and I knew very little of Minecraft, I knew what it was about, how it looked, I knew you had to build things and basic stuff like that… but I wasn't prepared for the night at all.
Excellent guide, expecially for new players.

Thank you , I am glad you enjoyed the guide. Hopefully it will help more people. And I have to say I kind of was in the same boat as you were when I started out. I had no idea what I was doing and I was like "hey what's this green creature" And BOOM! I got blown up and there was a big hole in the ground LOL! From then on I tried my best to stay away from Creepers LOL.

Luckily for me, somehow I didn't encounter any Creeper on my first night – an I'm glad for that, or else I would have ended up absolutely terrified! Well, maybe not so much since I knew there were things like that in the game… I often saw guys cosplaying as creepers at various convention and I obviously knew they were from Minecraft, since the art style is pretty recognizable. But I knew very little of the games so I had no idea of the explosions.

What a wonderful guide you have there admin! It's just sad that I haven't found out about this when I was starting out. But I am sure that this will help a lot of our fellow Minecraft players.
    Kudos!

Thank you, I am glad you liked it. I will have more guides to come. But lately I have been doing a lot of backend work. I merged my two blogs together and right now I am trying to fix all of the broken pictures on the blog. I should be back to writing new guides on Monday.

  5. Thanks so much for this, and I wish I would have seen it before my "first night". These guides are very useful, and, unlike "cheats" when it comes to other games, these guides don't seem to take away from the pleasure of achievement in the game–it's like talking to a travel expert before you explore a new country.

  6. What a well written guide! Really covers up what are the essential things to do on the first day. This will be a great help to new Minecraft players starting out.

I do remember doing that emergency plan you did too – it was my last resort when I had nowhere to go and when the sun was about to set 😀

    Very much welcome. 🙂
Hmm. Which part is taking most of your time: Editing pictures on the merged blogs or writing a guide?

Taking pictures and then writing the guide. And then I had to match up the pictures with the guide. Because I took the pictures in advance. 🙂

  8. I wish I could had read this when I started playing Minecraft two months ago! I'm a regular gamer but till then I had never tried this game. My first time was because of a friend's recommendation. No regrets! Such a great game but it actually has it's tricks. If I had read this before, my experience at the beginning would have been much easier. Nevertheless, still really great and helpful post!

This guide is a must-read for any new Minecraft players! It will help you out so much if you have just started and you don't know anything about the survival aspect of the game.

My first-night experience was pretty similar to @Xilkozuf I had no idea that there are monsters that come creeping out at night… so of course, I don't need a shelter, right?? WRONG! I was just chopping some wood and exploring and before I knew it, it went from sunny to pitch dark and some weird noise approaching me… I turned around and you can guess how it ended.

But yeah, an amazing guide. I like that you always add pictures so it's easier to understand. When I was a newb I didn't even know how to make a crafting table 🙁

  9. I think my first few attempts on Minecraft were pretty terrible. My weakness was locating my base of operations. Sometimes I wander way too far and got lost. Having a good sense of direction is helpful.

Oh! I thought it's arranging them. But nevertheless, I'm pretty sure, I mean, we all are pretty sure that it would turn out better than the previous one. 😉 Look at those comments coming in, they are loving it. Haha.

What happened on my first night? I was chomped down by a monster. What else? Haha! It was not a biggie for me since I thought to myself – everybody dies in their first night right?

By the way, you have provided us with a great guide. Having a shelter and being able to mine safely is such a great idea. And that technique to bury yourself alive to escape monsters? That's definitely genius (it definitely comes second to Solid Snake's technique of using a cardboard box to avoid detection).

  10. Your guide is very good, is explicit and is very helpful. My guide was my son, he helped me a lot in my first Minecraft games, but your blog may help a lot of the newcomers because the first night is the worst.

Thank you, I am so glad that you liked it, I worked very hard on it. And I hope that it can help others as well. I plan on writing a lot more guides. 🙂

Well, I felt exactly the same way… but fortunately, I had this bunch of cousins that seriously are masters on MC. They gave the basics so didn't die so fast. I was dominating the creative side of MC, before going into survival. Also, they gave me a lot of links to tutorials, and blogs, so I could learn my first tips and avoid being caught by creatures.

This guide is just great, I wish I knew that before I started playing.. My night was just like everyone else's night, I was thinking it was pretty cool that there was a night and day cycle feature, then all of a sudden all of the creatures we all love popped out.. Skeletons, creepers. You can imagine how that went, I was surprised and was cursing pretty hard 😀

I used to follow random entry and learn as you go approach. But by spending countless hours. I am starting to realize that my method was only good for those who have plenty of time in their hand. And that being said, you have presented some really good points. I think planning the minecraft is really important for any new comer into the game.

  13. I collect food to last me the whole entire night by killing animals and harvesting too. Afterwards, I let myself stay put inside the house. Sometimes I sleep to make the game faster. 😉

That’s pretty much how it goes for most people, they are not aware of the monsters and the day and night cycle is pretty fast, 10 minutes I think. And the next thing you know the monsters are wiping the floor with them. And unless you have some kind of armor they hit hard and fast and it only takes a few seconds of getting hit before you die lol. :cwl:
